Artificial Intelligence Assisting Fashion Retail

Updated: Jan 22, 2019

Imagine a Fashion App for your mobile phone, where you can hold your phone’s camera up to an adjacent mirror, and digitally project a dapper-looking suit and tie onto your reflection, while having the voice an advanced Artificial Intelligence commenting on how you look.’ Or better yet an app, that allows users to customize and personalize any outfit of any sort, whilst having the digital render of that outfit on their phone’s screen! When I mean “Artificial Intelligence”, I speak of more than just your average recommendation system on your JD Sports or Champs Sports website that tells you to buy an Adidas Logo Tee because you nonchalantly purchased a body spray, but of course they want you to be brand loyal.

Thanks to researchers from the University of California, a type of artificial intelligence that specializes in generating photorealistic images of clothing articles for every user. Furthermore, the researchers believe that this could be a massive cornerstone in assisting buyers find items that they would be interested in beyond what is currently in stock at a certain location! Another example details how even multinational e-commerce conglomerate, known as Alibaba, has unveiled a software that can recommend clothing articles to users based on what items they took worth them into a store’s fitting room! The possibilities are seemingly endless!

Personally, Action Sci-Fi flicks or games that feature a plucky protagonist and their trusty A.I have always genuinely fascinated me. Sidekick. Yes, I am looking at you Cortana from the Halo series, and JARVIS from the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. If anything, I am genuinely pining for their to be a customizable voice for the Fashion A.I.’s too because who wouldn’t want to be gazing in the mirror, trying on a virtual Tommy Hilfiger Logo Jumper while having David Attenborough simultaneously narrate on how my torso ends up looking like a Goomba from Super Mario if said jumper doesn’t come in an Extra Small.
